Evolutionary Big Bang - Wonders of the Universe w/ Brian Cox - BBC

ם ב-20 בOct 2013
To celebrate World Space Week from 4 to 10 October 2013 we're uploading clips from Wonders of the Universe with Professor Brian Cox. With some of the world's most fascinating fossils in hand Brian considers how, but for an apparently obscure moment in the early evolutionary history of life, all the secrets of light may have remained hidden. Because although the universe is bathed in light that carries extraordinary amounts of information about where we come from, it would have remained invisible without a crucial evolutionary development that allowed us to see. Only because of that development can we now observe, capture and contemplate the incredible wonders of the universe that we inhabit.

Having explored the wonders of the solar system, Professor Brian Cox steps boldly on to an even bigger stage - the universe. Who are we? Where do we come from? For thousands of years humanity has turned to religion and myth for answers to these enduring questions. But in this series, Brian presents a different set of answers - answers provided by science.

Legal Cannabis 2013 - Documentary

Medical cannabis refers to the parts of the herb cannabis used as a form of medicine or herbal therapy, or to synthetic forms of specific cannabinoids such as THC (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol) as a form of medicine. The Cannabis plant has been used as a medicine over an extensive period of time, with legendary evidence dating back to the fictional Shen Nung in 2737 BCE.[1] Cannabis is one of the 50 "fundamental" herbs of traditional Chinese medicine,[2] and is prescribed for a broad range of indications. However, organizations such as the American Society of Addiction Medicine dismiss the concept of "medical marijuana" because the plant in question fails to meet the standard requirements for approved medicines; that is, marijuana is associated with many serious, well documented, negative health effects.[3]

'Gravity" Review:' There's Never Been a Film Like 'Gravity'

Gravity starring Sandra Bullock, George Clooney, and Ed Harris is reviewed by Ben Mankiewicz (host of Turner Classic Movies) and Christy Lemire (ChristyLemire.com).

See what other critics are saying:http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/gravi...

GRAVITY, directed by Oscar (R) nominee Alfonso Cuaron, stars Oscar (R) winners Sandra Bullock and George Clooney in a heart-pounding thriller that pulls you into the infinite and unforgiving realm of deep space. Bullock plays Dr. Ryan Stone, a brilliant medical engineer on her first shuttle mission, with veteran astronaut Matt Kowalsky (Clooney). But on a seemingly routine spacewalk, disaster strikes. The shuttle is destroyed, leaving Stone and Kowalsky completely alone.

Psychologist Elizabeth Loftus studies memories. More precisely, she studies false memories, when people either remember things that didn't happen or remember them differently from the way they really were. It's more common than you might think, and Loftus shares some startling stories and statistics, and raises some important ethical questions we should all remember to consider.

Memory-manipulation expert Elizabeth Loftus explains how our memories might not be what they seem -- and how implanted memories can have real-life repercussions. Full bio »

The importance of growing your own food locally: Xavier Fux at TedXSanMi...

(Now with English subtitles! Just click the CC icon on the lower right of the video window - and click it again to get rid of the box that pops up). You can press the letter B on your keyboard to add a black border behind it for easier reading; and if you want to adjust the size, press the - or + key to shrink or enlarge the text. These keyboard shortcuts might not work while in fullscreen, but the adjustments you make will still show up when you go fullscreen.)

Xavier Fux graduated 1991 with a double major from the University of Western Ontario in Canada in Anthropology and Literature. In 2008, his jouney into permaculture began when he took a three-week course with Stephen Brooks and Evan Marks in Punta Mona in Costa Rica. He went on to receive his certificate in Permaculture Design at the Permaculture Research Institute of Australia, in Ethiopia. Xavier has worked on projects in Tulum and in 2011, he lead a Permaculture project in the Congo, with a 500 strong Pygmy community, which had been evicted from their ancestral lands. He is a founder of and active in Tacotal, a 32 acre eco-village in Orotina, Costa Rica. Xavier is also the founder and CEO of Green Beat, a company dedicated to providing consulting and advisory services in permaculture and green solutions. He currently manages the design and implementation of a rooftop nursery that will produce 3000 lettuces a week for local consumption in Mexico City and a Green Beat farm in Tulum. This talk is about the importance and possibilities of urban farming, and growing your own food locally.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

The Hebrew University is beginning to erect the largest brain research institute in Europe. This is the utmost reflection of the dramatic stage that brain research has reached at the start of the 21st century. The connected parts of the puzzle reveal a bright and colorful picture: molecular, anatomical and optical techniques have allowed us to become intimately acquainted with the processes underlying learning and memory in the brain. Furthermore, sophisticated mathematical methods and huge computational power have accelerated our capability to build artificial brains. We can now explore how the physical constituents of the brain give rise to perception, action, consciousness, and feelings like the joy of music. This emergent understanding has far-reaching technological, clinical and social implications.

The thread of thought in this course, accessible to any interested person, will start by describing the building blocks of this amazing machine and will continue with an overview regarding the neurobiological basis of learning and memory. The course will describe new methods for an optical voyage into the behaving brain and will touch on ways to repair the sick brain using brain-machine interfaces. The course will end with a discussion about the biological basis for aesthetic feelings and consciousness. This meeting of the brain-kind will also include two discussions with brain researchers: one on the question of Are we free to choose? and the other on the question of Can the brain understand itself?

Pioneer Science: Discovering Deep Space | BBC Documentary

Around the world, a new generation of astronomers are hunting for the most mysterious objects in the universe. Young stars, black holes, even other forms of life. They have created a dazzling new set of super-telescopes that promise to rewrite the story of the heavens.
This film follows the men and women who are pushing the limits of science and engineering in some of the most extreme environments on earth. But most strikingly of all, no-one really knows what they will find out there.
Not even drop-dead good looks and boyish enthusiasm could save Brian Cox from the first law of science on TV. No matter how hard you try, you can't make cutting-edge astrophysics intelligible for the scientifically illiterate. After all, even the scientifically literate barely have a clue what's going on; and if they do, they don't always agree. So throughout Wonders of the Solar System, I found myself saying: "I'm sure this is a-m-aaazing, Brian, but I haven't a clue why."
Horizon: Seeing Stars showcasing the world's best telescopes, got round this problem by not bothering to explain the difficult stuff, the basic message of the voiceover being: "This is all really important but I'm not going to say why, as you won't understand, so just sit back and enjoy the pictures because they are stunning." This no-nonsense approach was surprisingly effective because it lived up to its billing: the images were breathtaking.
